Dear B&HFC members,
This is an update on where Brighton and Hove Fencing Club currently stand on restarting club nights and the advice currently being given by British Fencing.
We’ve been in close contact with BACA and British Fencing over the last few months. Here’s an outline of what we are hoping to put in place.
Venue – In regards to venue – BACA have informed us they hope to restart evening hire at the start of September. We will be aiming to restart training evenings as soon as we have the ok to do so from BACA. We’ll update members on a definite start date once we have it.
Booking – We will need to know in advance of an evening who will be attending and will devise an online form which we will email out to members and we must receive notice that you wish to attend before the evening of training. Please ONLY book if you will definitely turn up or you may deny other fencers a space. Currently we are working out total numbers of fencers allowed. Preliminary it will be 18 however we may need some fencers to wait in the corridor while some fencers are in the gym (see BF protocol below)
Capacity – Spaces will be limited to adult and student full members (no guests or juniors) for now. – This I know will be disappointing for our juniors but the guidelines from British Fencing currently only allow a small number of people to be present in the space available and as juniors tend to be accompanied by an adult this would reduce our capacity greatly. We will be looking constantly at other possible options as they become available to try to get the juniors up and running again as soon as we are able.
Covid-19 Procedures –
There will be an entry/exit protocol where you will need to queue in the corridor and come into the hall and sign in one at a time giving full address, email and phone number, hand sanitiser will be available on entry. There will be an electronic thermometer to take each fencers temperature on entry. Then please proceed to designated kit areas. PLEASE DO NOT ATTEND IF YOU HAVE ANY COVID-19 SYMPTOMS!
BF Protocol – 6 person bubbles. Fencers will be able to fence in groups of 6 only, you can only fence people in your designated group of 6 and can either fence each person up to 15 its (max of 15 minutes) or fence each person to 5 hits 3 times. You must not mix groups. While fencing 2 people on Paste referee at the side to keep a distance. Currently BF say there must be no fleching and no close quarter contact under 1 metre distance.
Please sanitise your hands before and after a bout. At the end of a bout no hand shaking is permitted. Sanitiser will be available for cleaning box and spool part that have been handled.
Kit – No group club kit (Jackets/masks/gloves/breeches/plastrons/weapons/body wires/lames) will be available for use so please ensure you have your own kit if you wish to fence.
BF recommend all fencers wear a protective face mask while at training and also to wear that mask or a mask liner underneath your fencing mask. Leon Paul have devised a mask liner which is available.
British Fencing Guidelines –
We would also be grateful if you could fill in the Return to fencing survey in the below link.

The committee wish you all the best and we hope to see very soon
B&HFC Club Committee.
Hi everyone, hope you’re keeping safe and well.
Just to keep you updated on considerations for a return to fencing.
Re opening the club is dependent on 2 basic things:
1: British Fencing’s approval.
2: BACA opening it’s doors.
Both of which will have safety guidelines and conditions.
As a committee, we have made good use of our time away and have compiled our own health and safety initiatives tailored to our specific space and activity which we will integrate.
So, we are as ready as we can be to welcoming you all back once we get the green light.
As soon as we do, we’ll email all members, post on FaceBook and on our site.
If you have any concerns or questions regarding our club re opening, then please email us
Stay safe and watch this space.
We would like to take this opportunity to address the issue of club membership and fees during the current situation.
For those members that pay annually in a lump sum we will postpone the renewal date of the membership for the amount of months that the club has closed.
E.g. if your membership is due in October and the club has been closed for three months your renewal date will be moved to January 2021.
For members who pay monthly by Standing order – Due to the nature of the Standing order system we do not have the facility to stop taking payments from our end. Therefore, it is up to individual members to instruct their bank to stop the Standing order. The Standing order can then be reinstated once club activities resume. (We are happy for the Standing order to be restarted 1 month following the re-opening of the club to take into account the past months closure.)
Beginner course fees that have been prepaid. – To Those beginners/intermediates who are currently on a 6 week course, we will simply carry on where we left off once the club re-opens.
In regards to the above points it is entirely up to each club member to decide whether or not they want to continue paying their membership fees and we have had some club members who have said they would like to continue to pay their subs regardless of the situation in support of the club.
Eileen Pitman passed away earlier this week.
Founder and coach of Portslade Fencing Club, she was a true stalwart of Sussex County Fencing Union and South East Region Fencing for many decades. Along with many other achievements within the fencing community, she was awarded an M.B.E in 2006.
Eileen’s passion and energy for the sport has greatly enriched and influenced so many fencers and clubs alike.
We thank you Eileen.

Well done to our very own Nigel B and his team mates for taking bronze in the Welsh Team Championships at the weekend. Nigel secured the win by 2 points with 6 secs to go!!
….. to Jethro, Pacuame, Vincent and James who competed at the Ardingly Invitational Fencing Tournament this weekend – a competition that has grown to take in seven Sussex schools and attracted a 50-strong entry this year. Vincent took gold in the under 10s epée and James took gold in the under 12s. Jethro and Pacaume competed very well in the under 14 foil in their first tournament and Jethro came fourth, despite some malfunctioning kit and Pacaume fifth against some fierce opposition from much older fencers.
